Reading and Writing exercise of "El Cartero de Neruda" by Antonio Skármeta

After reading the last chapter of "El cartero de Neruda", by Antonio Skármeta, the "¡ Y qué me cuentas” group chose eight words from the reading to create a collective story. The eight words are the following:

1. Impermeable
2. Madrugada
3. Engolado
4. Agacharse
5. Transcurrir
6. Avivando
7. Encendedor
8. Secuestrar

Below is the story that the group wrote using the eight words. Please notice that there are some words in parenthesis. These words reflect the process of the writing. In this particular story, the students were trying to find the right word and the right preposition to describe an action of a kidnapper. All the words that are in parenthesis are the words that they chose and decided to change when they found out that those words didn't describe, in a precise manner, their thoughts.

Here is the story:


"...entonces, por la madrugada, el joven se agachó cuando escuchó la voz engolada de un secuestrador (cubierto con) (por) (llevando un) (disfrazado con) escondido debajo de un impermeable. Transcurrió mucho tiempo. De repente el tipo usó un encendedor avivando la flama. Se quemó, y el joven se escapó".

Now let's read the same story without the words in parenthesis:

"...entonces, por la madrugada, el joven se agachó cuando escuchó la voz engolada de un secuestrador escondido debajo de un impermeable. Transcurrió mucho tiempo. De repente el tipo usó un encendedor avivando la flama. Se quemó, y el joven se escapó".

Reading and Writing Excercises of " El Cartero de Neruda", Fragmento # 1 by Antonio Skármeta

Here are the eight words that the ¡Y que me cuentas! group chose after reading one of the chapters of "El Cartero de Neruda"

1. Mariposa
2. Sonrisa
3. Interruptor
4. Plagio
5. Cartero
6. Desfallecer
7. Pensando
8. Comunista

The story that the group wrote using the eight words (mistakes in parenthesis) is:

"El cartero se quedó pensando de la sonrisas falsas del comunista. De repente alguien accionó el interruptor y todo quedó oscuro. (Se) sentía algo en su estómago, como mariposas, antes de desfallecer. Esto no es un plagio, es la verdad."

Yesterday when we finished this exercise, I didn't realize that we used the verb "pensar" followed by the preposition "de". This is not correct. According to this sentence, the preposition that has to go right after the verb "pensar" is "en".

Here is the story without mistakes:

"El cartero se quedó pensando en las sonrisas falsas del comunista. De repente alguien accionó el interruptor y todo quedó oscuro. Sentía algo en su estómago, como mariposas, antes de desfallecer. Esto no es un plagio, es la verdad”.

Reading and Writing Exercise of "El Cartero de Neruda" (first chapter), by Antonio Skármeta

These are the eight words that the ¡Y qué me cuentas! group chose after reading the first chapter of "El cartero de Neruda"

1. Complejo de culpa
2. Aspirina
3. Crujiente
4. Sarcasmo
5. Manosear
6. Feroz
7. Babilónico
8. Película

Using these eight words, the group wrote the following story (the words that are in parenthesis are words that the group chose and decided to change as they wrote the story. I like to leave them so we all can see the writing process)

"La película empieza así: El león feroz con una melena (cara) babilónica anda por el bosque rugiendo y manoseando a cualquier animal que encuentra en el sendero real. Se encuentra con un venaditio crujiente y delicioso y canta con sarcasmo: "Fito el venadito, eres mi mejor bocadito (platillo)" y lo engulle de un golpe.
Después de la cena, necesitó una aspirina y sufrió un complejo de culpa."
